Our intention here is to analyse chapter XX from Vita nova and draw how it leads into Canto V of the Commedia. Nevertheless, as in this chapter, and in general the Dolce stil novo, has a crucial precedent in Guido Guinizzelli’s canzone, “Al cor gentil rempaira sempre amore” [To the noble heart always returns love]. It will be our first task to analyse this canzone, its load of “philosophical” arguments and its doctrinal content (the doctrine of love).
